I started crafting whilst recouperating from an accident, and from my first attempts with peeloffs and paint - I was hooked! Now my passion is my BUG! and now BEADING!

Oval Nestabilities - Information and Sizes

OVALS

Ovals are a little different than circles. For a start there are two sets of ovals:

Classic and Petite.

They not only have a different amount of scallops, they are also different in shape. The Petite shape with 37 edges is more oval shaped than the Classic that has 22 edges. You could describe them as the Classic Scallop being a rounded oval and the Petite being a longer narrower oval.

The Largest die in the Classic Ovals measures approx. 4" x 3.1/l6"
The Largest die in the Petite Ovals measures approx. 4.75" x 3.75"

Therefore, you need the right Standard Oval to fit the right Scallop Oval

Standard Classic Oval Large (S4 -110)
co-ordinates with Classis Oval Scallop Large (S4 -111)

Standard Classic Oval Small (S4-112)
co-ordinates with Classic Oval Scallop Small (S4-113)

co-ordinates with Petite Oval Scallop Large (S4-139)

Standard Petite Oval Small (S4-140)

Tippy Thursday - How the Labels will work

Hi, Thanks for all your comments.  I have made a start on helping you to find posts, but first of all I have removed the "Search" feature, because for some reason it doesn't want to work with me!

What I have decided to do is to recatalogue my posts starting with Nestabilities.  Instead of grouping all under the one heading, now if you look under "labels" you will find:  Squares, Circles, Ovals, Rectangles, Labels 1, 2 etc.,  plus headings such as Borders, Altering die shapes and so on.  This should simplify findng articles of interest.  You will (eventually) be able to check out info on sizes, sandwiches, problems solving, but most importantly what you can do with a certain die.

I'm also in the process of listing availability and size information on all of the different dies.  The very fact that there are so many different shapes and sizes available to buy will make this a useful feature in the Cupboard. For new owners of any die cutting machine, or if you are interested in buying new dies, you would need to look under the labels " Dies - Info and Sizes" or "Squares - Info and Sizes".

In the post below I have itemised all the different Nestabilities Squares - I was amazed at the result!
I had no idea that there were so many!!  "Wonky Squares" never heard of them before - I will probably find this is the case when I look into the other shapes!!!

Hope you'll find this useful, I found it interesting in the fact that the label list shown which dies I favour most and also those I have not used much!

I'll be back tomorrow with a new idea from Julie that you will not want to miss.  Hope you'll have time to drop by, in the meantime have a great day in this lovely September weather.

Nellie Snellen - Extending a rectangle die

I have received a query about my post yesterday and so to make my instructions more precise I have a few photos for you.

Emboss your strip of card

Position die

Run through the Bug to this point and then run back again

so far....so good....you have your first cut

Place your die at the other end of the strip - part of the first cut will need to overlap the new cut and at this point it is important that they line up exactly

make your second cut

to this point - then run back again

your extended rectangle!

Sorry if I confused anyone with me brief instructions, hope these pictures will help you.
AND, thanks for letting me know - I would rather you tell me if I have made the instructions to brief, then I can put it right.  Sometimes I do something automatically and forget that I have been doing it for a long time and that others may not have!  Have a good day....

Tippy Thursday - Cuttlebug B Plates

Cuttlebug B Plates - I get asked about these plates.  How long to they last?  Why do they bend?  Do dies harm them?

This is my experience of B Plates:
Yes they do mark.  The dies cut into them - but are still useable!  If they are very marked like mine, you will find that the marks do emboss themselves onto your cardstock if you are cutting apertures for example.  To avoid this you can place a piece of scrap paper between the card and the plate.

Yes, they do bend.  These are my plates which I have been using for 3 years.  You can see that they are only slightly mis-shaped.  There are different views on these plates and using them.

1:  Always use the same plate when die cutting - I never think about it - I just use the first one I pick up!

2:  Never turn them - I do and have done from the beginning because I didn't know anything different!

3.  Use the C plate to cut on instead because it's stronger - I have a Cuttlebug Mate (hi Chrissie) who does this so I know it works for she uses her Bug daily.  Me, I still cut on the B, but have occasionally cut on the C by mistake!  The C plate will also show cut marks.
This is a Cuttlebug alphabet die - they arrive straight, but bend when used and you cannot straighten them.  You might if you are a strong armed Cuttler!

Put the die between the plates - you can see why the plates bend!

I only use Cuttlebug, Nestabilities, Nellie Snellen and Joy Craft dies, I have no experience of other makes.  I have found that it is the CB dies that do the bending of plates.  You get your machine with the freebies and, of course, want to use them - Straight away bendy plates!  This is just what happened to me when my machine arrived!!  My reaction to this was to turn the plates and although I'm advise I shouldn't, I did and my plates are 3 years old.  I leave you to make your own conclusion as to which method you use.

I will mention one other thing about die cutting - sandwiches.  I have covered this matter previously and you will find all the info by looking in the labels section on my sidebar.  However, when you become familiar with a machine, you find that you give little thought to the sandwich - you just know how to do it!  Today I was watching C&C and their pick of the week is Spellbinder dies and when Sheena Douglas used the sandwich slightly differently to me.

She used:  A/C/die cut face up/ card/ B.  I can see the advantage in this way because when you want to emboss the die you have only have to slide the C plate away.  However, using this sandwich you are not sure where your die is cutting unless you use tape to fasten it in place!

I use:  A/B/cardstock/die cut face down/C.    This way I can see where I'm placing my die, but when embossing I have turn my die over.

For die cutting both sandwiches work, each way has it advantage and disadvantage - it's down to what suit you best.

Please leave me a comment if you would like to add your views.  In the meantime - have a good die cutting day!

NB:  Chrissie said:  "When I first got my Bug I found that the 6x2 dies bent in the machine, but then I read that the dies should be placed cut side up and they don't bend AT ALL!

I find it really useful using them this way too, as when using the Alpha dies as I don't cut out a whole plate at once, just the letters I need. SO I can see where I'm placing the DST covered pieces of card for each letter.

Like you I have B plates for cutting and B plates for embossing. The cutting ones are really banged up but work nevertheless. As you so rightly mention I always use my C plate to cut when using Nesties etc. which stays absolutely flat, but is of course VERY marked. When it gets too bad I'll replace it. After all they wouldn't sell replacements if they were meant to last for ever!"

ikki:  I have now tried this way of cutting alphabet dies, AND IT WORKS WELL, and the DST does not stick to the die as it does the other way round!  As for the dies, my are bent I wonder if they will straighten.  Good advice Chrissie, thanks.

Information on Buying Dies - Spellbinders Nestabilities/Nellie Snellen

Hi, I realise that due to the many posts that I do, that some of the info gets lost! Since many peeps are looking at buying dies (or hopefully having dies bought as presents) I thought I would make the research I did on buying and sizes of dies more easy to find.

So, now in the Cupboard side bar (on the right), Under Labels, just click on Dies - info and sizes.

I will also do the same for info on Embossing Folders, but this may take me awhile, so please be patient with me!

Tippy Thursday - Nellie Snellen and tips on how to avoid lines

Hi, Today I'm going back to my TT. (tippy Thursday) post. I started this post wayback to help  new and experienced Cuttlebug users overcome promblems and also to learn of new ways of using the Bug. In this post I also pass on info on new products, tips and techniques that I heard about and think will be interesting to fellow crafters. I'm also pleased to pass on your tips and comments, so if you have something you would like to share...just let me know...and it will be done!

Today I thought I would show you a few pics of the new Nellie Snellen Frame Dies.

I have used the Rectangle - this gives a very fancy die-cut frame,

but you could also be used to the die to make a mat. Indeed, you could die-cut a mat, then a frame to fit over the top, add your embellisment inside the frame and you have a super topper!  I have just thought of this and will have a go later and see how it turns out!!!

Recently, I received a query from Jo (Kinglake) on how I avoided join-up folder lines when using a folder to make a second embossing on a card..   The way I overcome this problem is to make a Modifying Folder Pad (Check out the tutuorials  under Labels on MFP on the side bar).  The pad is slightly smaller than the folder so that no pressure is put on the edges of the folders when embossing. Bit a bit of a nuisance to do, but once done you can save for future use and the bonus is NO LINES!  This was a technique that I developed  back in Feb/March because I hate line marks, so if you go back you will see that you can utilise this method for borders, or for making borders with the 2 x 2 folders.  Hope this helps Jo.

Now I'm off to see if I can make another card using the NS frames and mat?!?!? Have a good day and thanks for dropping by.

PS: If you are interested in the NS dies - check out my supplier on the side bar. I can recommend this lady as a fair, competent and reliable trader.

Spellbinder Borderabilities Dies

This week I feel I'm on a roundabout and someone (????) is making it go faster, and faster. Please stop I need time to think - it's Tippy Thursday again!

I have the Spades Borderabilities. They make a grand border, but because of the intricate nature of the cut, it's difficult to press them out of the die! I've tried pins, needles, sissors - they all worked but take time. Problem - I don't like fiddly things and have little time! Then I read this tip from the Spellbinder Forum - it's a must to pass on to you. Wax paper! This will help with any intricate die for example the snowflakes. Thanks Spellbinder Forum.

Bug Sandwich: A plate, B plate, card, wax paper, die, C plate
(You will need to adjust the sandwich to other die cutting machines.)
NB: You can also use this sandwich:  A plate, C plate, die, card, B plate

I have also tried this with Greaseproof paper - it works. Rubbing over with a candle also works, but it's messy.  Updated 1/8/2010:  after rubbing candle over the die, buff the wax onto the die, it acts like a polish!

Using the wax or greaseproof paper, the die cut comes away with ease. Here you will see one with the bits pushed out and the others left in. Why? because if you do this...run tape across the back before removing the cut from the die and it STOPS the bits coming out - then you get another look. Cool hey! Brill effect using thick gold and silver mirror card.

Then you can do this....
add a card/paper die cut over the gold/silver base. Another completely different look - making your Borderabilities more versatile! I do like value for money!!

Back on Monday, till then happy Cuttling,
